Monitoring with proximal optical sensors to optimize N management of greenhouse vegetable crops

Summary: Intensive vegetable systems are commonly associated with appreciable nitrate contamination of water bodies, as occurs in the greenhouse-based system of southeast (SE) Spain. This contamination is associated to the nitrogen (N) fertilizer and irrigation applications used to ensure high levels of production. To reduce this contamination, optimal N management is required to reduce the N losses to the environment and improve N use efficiency. There are several tools that can be used to assess crop N status and which could improve the N use efficiency. The use of these tools will provide vegetable growers with the ability to match the N supply to crop N demand throughout the growing season. An effective and rapid means to assess crop N status is the use of proximal optical sensors.
