Abstract: Background: Currently, there is a growing interest in the Baby Led Weaning method. Approximately from six months and / or when the baby has acquired a series of requirements, solid foods are offered, with a specific presentation, that the baby selfmanages. With this method it is the infant himself who takes the food that is within his reach and sets the pace by deciding what and how much to eat. Objectives: To know the possible benefits and risks of the Baby Led Weaning method, comparing it with the traditional feeding method based o crushed foods through a bibliographic search. Methods: integrative bibliographic review between Januay and May 2020 on the benefits and risks of practicing the BLW method, which included full- text articles that were published within the range of the last 10 years. The search was performed in the databases: Pubmed, Cochrane, Cuiden and Dialnet. Results: A total of 16 articles were analyzed. Most of them demonstrated the benefits and risks of applying the BLW method as an alternative to the traditional complementary feeding method. Conclusions: there are several short-term benefits of the BLW method, among which we can highlight orofacial development with chewing and fine psychomotricity with food grasping. Long-term benefits are not described in the reviewed literature. As for the risks, it has been proven that there is no increased risk of choking. There seems to be a risk of vitamin B12, iron and zinc deficiency, depending on the food offered. Therefore, to supply this cricumstance, a new trend called BLISS has emerged. | es_ES |
