En las últimas décadas, el volumen de publicaciones de obras literarias destinadas al público infantil ha aumentado de manera espectacular. En algunos casos, los fines que parecen caracterizar estos textos se encuentran en los valores sociales que en teoría trasmiten: multiculturalismo, solidaridad, etc. En otros, en la utilidad formativa que los textos pueden tener. En ambos casos se les suponen calidad literaria. Si trasladamos a nuestro sistema educativo estos fines, puede deducirse que cualquier obra de literatura infantil no solo está vinculada a un área de experiencia específica, sino que además está relacionada directamente con las demás parcelas del conocimiento. Son, pues, productos literarios que tienen una finalidad educativa evidente y deben expresar cualidades estético-literarias.
