ABSTRACT Background: People with autism have unique abilities and needs that change with age. While most warning signs are normally identified during childhood, certain cases may go unreported or even untreated. Many people go unrecognised or appear “neurotypical” because they unconsciously try to hide their symptoms. As a result, many women and girls with autism are misdiagnosed and do not benefit from a proper diagnosis until later in life. Aim: To examine the recent scientific literature on the influence of late diagnosis of autism in adolescent and adult women. Methods: During the months of November and December 2021, a literature review was conducted. Various databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO) were used for this purpose, with papers that responded to the purpose stated and met the established selection criteria. Results: This review focuses on ten papers. After analysing the findings, it was determined that possible causes of delays in diagnosis included gender differences in symptom presentation, masking, and medical and social stigma. There were serious consequences for the well-being and quality of life of these women, many of whom suffered from anxiety and depression as a result of uncertainty and frustration. Diagnosis has been proved to bring relief as well as pave the way for access to certain resources. Conclusion: Autism can be a difficult condition to live with. It is therefore vital to learn to recognise warning signs, establish action plans that are better suited to the condition, and, in short, to always ensure that our patients’ rights are protected and that their independence is developed. | es_ES |
