This study analyzes the downfall caused by COVID-19 of tourism in Spain, a sector which is especially vulnerable given its narrow specialization. The quantitative study focuses on the differential territorial and sectoral effects at a provincial scale. Tourism in Spain is concentrated on the coast and is mostly carried out by international tourists in mass tourism modalities. As a result, tourist density is not homogeneous throughout the territory. The perception of health risks and the restrictions on mobility imposed to fight the spread of the disease have led to a delay, or even a cancellation at times, of tourist activity. It is found that the recoveries of domestic tourism and rural accommodations are faster than international tourism and the other types of accommodation, respectively. Therefore, inland provinces, which are more dependent on domestic tourism and rural tourism, are more resistant and resilient to the crisis. A reflection is made on the importance of fighting the tourist monoculture and ease overcrowded destinations in order to achieve a sector less vulnerable to future crises, while several proposals having into consideration the situation at the moment are given. | es_ES |
