La enfermedad de Ménière: medios y pacientes

Abstract

En la actualidad las enfermedades poco frecuentes siguen estando invisibilizadas y marginadas formando parte solamente de la vida de una minoría de personas. Sin duda, los medios de comunicación ejercen una gran labor al poder acercar y dar a conocer este tipo de patologías. Es por eso que el principal objetivo de este escrito consiste en analizar y averiguar cómo ha sido la recepción en los diarios sobre la enfermedad de Ménière. Así pues, en las siguientes páginas se desarrolla una revisión de las publicaciones periodísticas escritas desde el año 2010 hasta 2021. En efecto, consideramos que conocer la enfermedad es vital para poder hablar sobre ella. En un primer momento, este trabajo se centrará en conocer la propia enfermedad (causas, diagnóstico, tratamiento, etc.). Después, observaremos cuáles son los diarios más leídos en España y, a partir de ellos, averiguaremos cómo ha sido su representación pública y, específicamente, en qué diarios han aparecido publicaciones sobre la enfermedad de Ménière. Una vez constatados estos datos, seleccionaremos los años 2010 y 2021 para realizar un análisis cuantitativo que derivará en una muestra de resultados desarrollados mediante gráficos y tablas. Finalmente, se ha entrevistado a un paciente con esta enfermedad con el deseo de aproximarnos a un testimonio significativo y poder valorar y confrontar, así, los resultados de nuestra investigación. Today, rare diseases remain invisible and marginalised and are only part of the lives of a minority of people. No doubt about it, the media play an important role in bringing this type of pathology closer to the public and raising awareness of it. That is why the main objective of this paper is to analyse and find out how Ménière's disease has been received in the newspapers. The following pages therefore provide a review of journalistic publications written between 2010 and 2021. Indeed, we believe that knowledge of the disease is vital in order to be able to talk about it. Initially, this work will focus on learning about the disease itself (causes, diagnosis, treatment, etc.). Then, we will observe which are the most widely read newspapers in Spain and, from them, we will find out how they have been publicly represented and, specifically, in which newspapers publications about Ménière's disease have appeared. Once these data have been ascertained, we will select the years 2010 and 2021 to carry out a quantitative analysis that will lead to a sample of results developed through graphs and tables. Finally, a patient with this disease was interviewed in order to get closer to a significant testimony and thus be able to evaluate and compare the results of our research
