Comprendiendo las secuelas de la mutilación genital femenina: un estudio fenomenológico en mujeres subsaharianas residentes en España

Abstract

Objetivo: comprender las experiencias asociadas a las secuelas de la mutilación genital femenina/corte en mujeres subsaharianas supervivientes y residentes en España. Diseño: estudio cualitativo basado en la fenomenología hermenéutica de Merleau-Ponty. Participantes y entorno: Participaron 13 mujeres subsaharianas, supervivientes de la mutilación genital femenina/corte (MGF/C). El estudio fue realizado en dos provincias del sureste español que dan trabajo en los sectores agrícola y de servicios a numerosos inmigrantes africanos procedentes de etnias donde persiste la MGF/C. Datos y resultados: Se hicieron entrevistas en profundidad para la recolección de datos. Del análisis inductivo con ATLAS.ti, se desarrollaron dos temas principales, que representan las experiencias asociadas a las secuelas de MGF/C: (a) El impacto de la MGF/corte: Una salud sexual secuestrada y (b) El difícil proceso de reconstrucción genital: eliminar las secuelas y recuperar la integridad. Conclusiones e implicaciones: Las mujeres mutiladas sufrieron fuertes secuelas en su salud sexual, psicológica y obstétrica. La reconstrucción genital fue una difícil decisión, que contribuyó a la recuperación de su salud sexual y su identidad. Los profesionales tienen un papel importante en la atención a las secuelas, identificación de población en riesgo y orientación/asesoramiento para la recuperación de la salud sexual-reproductiva.Objective: to understand the experiences relating to the consequences of female genital mutilation in sub-Saharan female survivors living in Spain. Design: a qualitative study based on Merleau-Ponty’s hermeneutic phenomenology. Setting & Participants: 13 sub-Saharan women survivors of female genital mutilation (FGM) participated. The study was carried out in two south-eastern Spanish provinces where work in the agricultural and service industry is provided to many African immigrants originating from ethnic groups in which FGM is still prevalent. Measurements and findings: In-depth interviews were carried out for data collection. From the inductive analysis that used ATLAS.ti, two main themes were developed that represent the experiences relating to the consequences of FGM: (a) The impact of FGM: Hijacked sexual health and (b) The difficult process of genital reconstruction: overcoming the aftereffects and regaining integrity. Key conclusion and Implications for practice: The mutilated women experienced serious consequences in their sexual, psychological and obstetrical health. Genital reconstruction was a difficult decision but contributed to regaining their sexual health and identity. The professionals involved play an important role in the care provided for the associated consequences of FGM, in identifying the risk group and in providing advice to regain sexual and reproductive health.
