RESUMEN
Desde el origen de la industria petrolera, a principios del siglo XX, se ha venido haciendo una mala gestión de sus residuos que ha derivado en casos tan graves como el vertido de petróleo de Deepwater Horizon en el Golfo de México, considerado el más importante de la historia. Es por ello por lo que será de especial importancia encontrar una solución para biorremediar los ambientes contaminados con petróleo mientras se desarrollan alternativas más respetuosas con el medioambiente que vayan sustituyendo el uso masivo que se hace de estos compuestos contaminantes.
El objetivo de este trabajo fue buscar cepas del género Rhodococcus capaces de degradar algunos de los principales componentes del petróleo: benceno, tolueno y xileno, comúnmente conocidos con las siglas BTX. A partir de una colección de 16 cepas se analizó primero la toxicidad de los hidrocarburos tanto en medio sólido como sobre su condición de compuestos volátiles.
