El análisis de supervivencia es una técnica estadística que a lo largo de los años ha demostrado su utilidad al aplicarse en diversas áreas, en las que la biotecnología no resulta una excepción. Al contrario de lo que inicialmente se esperaría, el análisis de supervivencia no se centra únicamente en la supervivencia como tal, sino que ha visto ampliados sus horizontes al considerar la muerte como un evento, y no sólo restringirse al final de una vida. Estimar la probabilidad de que suceda un evento, el riesgo en el que se encuentra un grupo poblacional en concreto, comparar entre distintos procedimientos o la esperanza de vida de un individuo son incógnitas que pueden ser resueltas mediante la aplicación de las diversas metodologías con las que cuenta el análisis de supervivencia, como el método de Kaplan-Meier, la tabla de vida, o la regresión de Cox.
