Autoestima y rendimiento académico en Educación Primaria

Abstract

La autoestima supone un elemento esencial en el correcto desarrollo de las personas, ya que es la valoración positiva o negativa que los individuos realizan sobre sí mismos, de forma que influye en la forma de sentirse, ser y comportarse. Asimismo, las últimas investigaciones en este ámbito apuntan al importante impacto de aspectos como la autoestima, la inteligencia emocional o las emociones en el ámbito escolar de los niños y niñas. Por este motivo, el objetivo principal de este trabajo de investigación ha sido estudiar la posible relación entre el nivel de autoestima que presentan los alumnos y alumnas de Educación Primaria y su rendimiento académico, con el fin de observar cómo influye la autoestima en este ámbito. Para esto, se ha llevado a cabo un estudio en el que se han analizado los datos recogidos a través del cuestionario IGA-2000, instrumento de evaluación para medir la autoestima, y las notas de los estudiantes durante el primer trimestre en distintas asignaturas, entre ellas Ciencias Naturales, Ciencias Sociales, Matemáticas, Lengua e Inglés. En este estudio, la muestra analizada está formada por un total de 25 sujetos que cursan 5º de Educación Primaria, 12 mujeres y 13 varones. Además, se ha llevado a cabo un análisis descriptivo, un análisis correlacional y un análisis de diferencias de medias, con el fin de verificar o rechazar las hipótesis planteadas en este trabajo de investigación. A través de estos análisis se ha podido comprobar, en primer lugar, si existe relación entre la autoestima global, así como los distintos factores del cuestionario que corresponden a los diferentes tipos de autoestima, y el rendimiento académico. Y, en segundo lugar, se ha podido observar si existen diferencias de medias en cuanto al género de los estudiantes. Self-esteem is an essential component of a proper development of people since it is a positive or negative assessment that each persona makes about oneself, so it influences in their own way of feel, be and behave. Moreover, the latest studies maintain the idea that self-esteem, emotional intelligence and emotions has a huge impact in the educational field and also in primary school children. For this reason, the main goal of this research has been to study the potential relationship between primary school students’ level of self-esteem and their academic performance, to analyse how the self-esteem influence in this field. For this purpose, the data collection has been accomplished through IGA-2000 questionnaire, an assessment tool for measure the self-esteem, and the students’ grades that they obtained in the first trimester in different subjects, like Natural Science, Social Science, Mathematics, Spanish language and English. Also, in this research, the analyse sample was composed of 25 subjects from fifth grade of elementary school, 12 of them were female children and 13 of them were male children. In addition, a descriptive analysis, a correlational analysis and a mean differences analysis were accomplished in order to verify or reject the different assumptions of this research work. Firstly, through the analysis we have seen if a strong link between global self-esteem, the items of the questionnaire, which are the different types of self-esteem, and the academic performance exists. Secondly, we have checked if mean differences about gender exists between elementary school students.
