La empatía se refiere a la habilidad, cognitiva y emocional, que permite a un sujeto ponerse en la situación de otra persona, con el fin de conocer cómo piensa o cómo se siente, entender las intenciones de los demás, adelantarnos a sus reacciones, e incluso ayudarles en un momento determinado. Parece indiscutible que las personas diagnosticadas de esquizofrenia carezcan de empatía, esto se debe a la creencia de que son incapaces de socializar, a causa de su característico pobre funcionamiento social. De modo, que la esquizofrenia, como el resto de enfermedades mentales, están sujetas a un fuerte estigma que no permite a quienes la sufren vivir una inclusión real en la sociedad. Así, la presente revisión bibliográfica ha pretendido estudiar la empatía y la esquizofrenia en la edad adulta, a la par que ha comprobado si es cierto que los esquizofrénicos carecen de empatía.
